Cleveland Arts Prize Today

Since 1960, the Cleveland Arts Prize (CAP) has been at the forefront of Cleveland’s art community, making it the nation’s oldest municipal arts award and an ongoing platform for celebrating northeast Ohio’s exceptional arts and culture legacy. For nearly six decades, the organization has celebrated the contributions of more than 340 world class artists, cultural leaders and organizations that have expanded community access to the arts.  The Arts Prize selection process culminates each year with a formal and respected awards presentation at the Cleveland Museum of Art.  Five monetary prizes of $10,000 each are awarded to artists for exemplary work in arts disciplines that include Design, Literature, Theatre & Dance, Music, and Visual Arts. In addition, the organization honors individuals who are committed to cultivating the arts in the region with special recognition awards.  In recent years, nominations for Cleveland Arts Prizes have risen 30% annually.

New data released by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) show that the arts contribute nearly $800 billion annually to the U.S. economy, more than agriculture or transportation. The data confirm that the arts play a meaningful role in our daily lives, including through the jobs we have, the products we purchase, and the experiences we share.

CAP continues to steward the arts in our region, while adapting to the changing needs of a revitalizing, 21st century city.  In recent years, CAP has expanded its commitment to broaden community programming, with specific emphasis on developing more sustained relationships with awardees; facilitating dialogue between artists and residents traditionally underserved by arts programming; and breaking down barriers to awareness of and access to local arts assets.

Recognizing a need to nurture and support the next generation of artistic excellence, this year CAP launched a new fellowship program.  The On the Verge Fellowship or “Verge Fellowship” is CAP’s response in favor of artists who are not yet ready to receive a Cleveland Arts Prize but who have nonetheless demonstrated creativity, passion, and commitment to the arts. The Verge Fellowship provides a monetary stipend to five artists across multiple disciplines, who represent Cleveland’s diversity in the arts. Like the Cleveland Arts Prize awards, the Verge Fellowship rewards practicing artists in the Literary Arts, Visual Arts, Dance & Theatre, Music, and Design.

In addition, to ensure artists educational access to the arts, CAP continues to offer scholarships in Literature, Visual Arts, Dance and Music for outstanding academic achievement while pursuing their discipline..

Cleveland Arts Prize is committed to enhancing the quality of life in our region by supporting, cultivating, honoring and celebrating artistic excellence which can be accessed by all.
